Title : Sugammadex and Postoperative Pulmonary Complications
Abstract:
Major postoperative pulmonary complications after surgery are common. Five percent of adults experience these complications which result in increased mortality. Residual neuromuscular blockade is a known risk factor for this kind of complications. The most common drugs administered for muscle relaxation are rocuronium and vecuronium. Pharmacologic reversal of these agents is done either by neostigmine or the relatively new agent, sugammadex. Sugammadex provides more reliable, rapid and effective restoration of the neuromuscular tone. Since quantitative neuromuscular monitoring and extubation after adequate reversal are not routine, sugammadex may reduce the risk of postoperative pulmonary complications and even postoperative mortality.
