Global trigger tool and patient safety

Sugam Kale, Speaker at Surgery Conference
Department of Jurong Health, National University Health System, Singapore
Title : Global trigger tool and patient safety

Abstract:

Anaesthesia and surgery have now become team events and not an individual pursuit anymore. Working in teams has advantages and disadvantages. The continuity of care is sometimes fragmented. Information gets missed as it gets passed around doctors, nurses and their colleagues working in multiple shifts. This may result in minor or major complications in the perioperative period. Global Trigger tool was designed to capture common complications in perioperative period in a hospital setting. The incidence of these can be monitored and hospital wide harm rates can be calculated. Focused analysis of recurrent errors can reveal a pattern of things going wrong with a member of staff or in a certain ward or operating theatre. These can be rectified and continued to get monitored. Hospital wide harm rates over the years then reflect the patient safety culture within that setting.
