Intraoperative ureteric visualisation in laparoscopic colorectal surgery

Jayan Dewantha Jayasinghe, Speaker at Surgery Conferences
Royal Lancaster Infirmary, United Kingdom
Title : Intraoperative ureteric visualisation in laparoscopic colorectal surgery

Abstract:

Laparoscopic approach is increasingly favoured for colorectal surgery in both elective and emergency settings in all over the world. However, due to lack of haptic feedback, learning curve and increasing demands for training makes laparoscopic surgery more vulnerable to injuries of the ureter especially during left colonic resections. Several evolving techniques to visualise and protect ureters during laparoscopic abdomino-pelvic surgery has described, including ureteric stents and different methods of fluorescence ureterography. This presentation is a narrative review of historical evolution of these techniques to visualise ureter during laparoscopic colorectal surgery, assess pros and cons of each.  Also, a novel technique on real-time ureteric visualisation presented by the author at recent scientific forum will be introduced to complete the presentation.
