Title : Peri-collapsed state following atraumatic nasogastric tube insertion
Abstract:
Nasogastric tube (NGT) insertion is a procedure that is performed commonly. As with any procedure, there are known complications of NGT insertion – mostly related to local complications or airway related complications. Stimulation of the nasal cavity, pharynx or oesophagus may theoretically precipitate a variety of vagal reflexes during nasogastric tube insertion. Whilst rare, the possibility should not be overlooked. We seek to report a case of severe hypotension and peri-collapsed state requiring chest compressions following an atraumatic nasogastric tube insertion. This was done under general anaesthesia following a gastroscope. We further explore the possible reasons behind this event, seeking to remind the community of possible complications of even the most innocuous procedures.
