Title : Surgeons and anesthesiologists: Ethics in the relation and recommendations
Abstract:
The operating room is a concert of care providers, which includes surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and technical support staff. The most critical individual in the operating room, of course, is the patient. In all operating rooms, there is a common technology and common protocols that allow patients to be safely treated. Anesthesiologists and Reanimators are not only needed for surgical practice but are the privileged partners of the surgeon. Within the operating room team, the anesthesiologist should organize and complete his specialty with full independence in accordance with the Code of Ethics. All rules defined in this Code concerning the relationship between colleagues of different specialties apply during the surgical care of the patient: Independence and equality in taking responsibilities without any pressure or coercion, full use of the competence of both partners for the security of the patient, share information concerning the general status of the patient and the planned surgery, and obtain an informed consent before the surgery. The shared decisions and teamwork apply during the whole procedure, in the preoperative preparation, perioperative management, and in the postoperative care. In case of disagreement, or the emergence of a conflict, discuss in a positive way as it must be between colleagues, the security and welfare of the patient must be above any other; refer to the Medical Committee or other designated body in the institution. Conclusion: The Surgeon and the Anesthesiologist can spend as much time in the OR as with their family… in both sides the marriage can be difficult. A Surgeon cannot work without the Anesthesiologist & the OR, the OR cannot function without the Surgeon and the Anesthesiologist. Sacred union between 2 partners for the best welfare of the patient.
