The medical speciality of anesthesiology, sometimes known as anaesthesia, is concerned with the whole perioperative treatment of patients before, during, and after surgery. Anesthesia, intensive care medicine, critical emergency medicine, and pain medication are all included. Depending on the country, an anesthesiologist, anaesthesiologist, or anaesthetist is a physician who specializes in anesthesia. In some countries, the names are interchangeable, but in others, they refer to different jobs, with anesthetist being reserved for non-physicians such nurse anesthetists. The study and use of anesthesia to properly sustain a patient's essential functions during the perioperative period is at the heart of the speciality.
Pain medicines help to alleviate the suffering caused by disease, accident, surgical procedures, and chronic illnesses. Pain is felt in different ways by different people. Pain can strike at any time (acute). Pain medications, both OTC and prescription, are used to treat a range of symptoms. Pain from arthritis, headaches, and muscular strains can be relieved with over-the-counter medications. Prescription medications give more effective pain relief for chronic pain or severe pain following surgery or trauma. Opioids, as well as several antidepressants and anti-seizure drugs, are effective pain relievers.
