Mentoplasty, commonly known as chin surgery, is a cosmetic or reconstructive procedure aimed at enhancing the appearance of the chin. This surgical intervention involves reshaping the chin by either augmenting or reducing its size to create facial harmony and balance. Augmentation mentoplasty involves the use of implants (usually made of silicone) or bone repositioning techniques to enhance a receding or less prominent chin. This procedure aims to bring facial features into better proportion, improving overall facial aesthetics. Conversely, reduction mentoplasty focuses on reducing an excessively prominent or protruding chin. Through this surgery, the surgeon carefully removes excess bone or reshapes the existing bone structure to achieve a more proportionate facial profile. Mentoplasty is often performed as a standalone procedure or in conjunction with other facial surgeries like rhinoplasty (nose surgery) or facelifts to achieve a more balanced facial appearance. The surgery is typically conducted under general anesthesia and involves incisions made either inside the mouth or externally beneath the chin, minimizing visible scarring. Recovery from mentoplasty may involve temporary swelling, bruising, and discomfort, with a recommended downtime for healing. Results gradually become noticeable as swelling subsides, showcasing a more defined and harmonious facial contour. As with any surgical procedure, mentoplasty carries potential risks, requiring thorough consultation and consideration under the expertise of a qualified plastic surgeon.
