Anesthesiology is the branch of medicine concerned with pain treatment during the perioperative period (i.e., before, during, and after a surgical surgery). The drugs used are known as anesthesia, and the doctor who specializes in this field is known as an anesthesiologist. However, depending on the country or continent, terminology may differ. Anesthesiologists may be referred to as anesthetists in certain places, and the drug they provide as anesthetics in others. Anesthesiologists are typically educated after completing medical school, which can take anywhere from eight to twelve years depending on the country. Their rigorous training comprises in-depth knowledge acquisition in crucial areas such as pharmacokinetics (the effect of a medication on the body) and pharmacodynamics (the effect of a drug on the body) of pharmaceuticals. Anesthesiologists must be knowledgeable with mechanical breathing, various physiological monitoring, neuroanatomy, and other broad fields of medicine in addition to pharmacology.
